BIO
I came to the U.S. as a young immigrant at the age of 19. My mother brought me to Brooklyn, New York, and I immediately got a job as a Cashier in a department store. Work has and continues to be an important ethic and value for me. Although it was springtime in New York, it felt like the depth of winter to this island girl, so my mother relocated me to St. Thomas of the Virgin Islands. St. Thomas was a comfortable crossover for me between the island life of Trinidad and the grandeur of the U.S.

In St. Thomas, I became employed as a bank teller at Chase Manhattan Bank. I went on to work as an Oil and Gas Teller at Mercantile National Bank, when I moved to Dallas, Texas, several years later. My innate abilities, self-efficacy, and positive environmental feedback led me towards the career path of accounting. During a six-year enlistment in the Marine Corps, I began attending a community college. Graduating Summa Cum Laude in my undergraduate accounting studies revealed my passion for accounting. It has led me to enjoyable employment in government, management opportunities in corporate America, and my license as a CPA.

I began and developed a private accounting practice in search of work/life balance as a single parent. With the passing of the Sarbanes Oxley Act, audit work became impractical for a small practice. This shift prompted me to change my career path to education and led me to graduate school. Today, I work in one of the largest community colleges in Texas as a full-time accounting faculty and Program Coordinator. I continue to run a private practice offering tax and financial services.

Community healing, development, education, and economic growth are important to me. So, most of my community service is in mentorship and education. I serve on several non-profit Boards of Directors, both in leadership and supportive roles. The organizations in which I serve provide community development, outreach, mentorship, and education. I serve as a mentor and primarily in the area of financial oversight, strategy, and support.
